Octave OnSite Completions enabled Rozelle Interchange to deliver a quality product on time

The Rozelle Interchange in Sydney’s inner western suburbs is a new underground motorway interchange and part of WestConnex - Australia’s largest ever road infrastructure project. It provides connectivity to the M4-M5 Link Tunnels and the City West Link, underground bypass of Victoria Road between Iron Cove Bridge and Anzac Bridge and connection to the future Western Harbour Tunnel.

The Rozelle Interchange will be mostly underground, as well as one of the most ambitious and complex interchange projects ever undertaken. More than 24 kilometers of tunneling will be conducted from the site of the old Rozelle Rail Yards.

The Rozelle Interchange is designed to transform road travel across Sydney. Motorists will save up to 19 minutes on a trip between Parramatta and the Sydney CBD using the M4 and the interchange. It will deliver new active transport options in Rozelle and transform the disused rail site into up to 10 hectares of open space.

A joint venture of John Holland and CPB Contractors (JHCPB) has been contracted to design and construct the Rozelle Interchange and Western Harbour Tunnel Enabling Works.

Challenges and objectives

Given the high-profile nature and critical importance of the Rozelle Interchange to Sydney’s infrastructure, JHCPB’s overall objective was to harness a completions solution that would enhance productivity and efficiency, streamline processes, and guarantee the integrity of the finished project.

With multiple vendors and stakeholders involved in the project, the organisation required a robust, digitized completions solution that would:

  • Extend real time data access via Application Programming Interface (APIs)

  • Consume critical completions/ commissioning information for analytical reporting

  • Provide detailed, real-time reporting on the progress of the project

  • Manage construction and commissioning activities effectively

  • Visualize project constraints (e.g. pending critical punch, task delayed) in a transparent manner

Personnel from CPB Contractors had a previous positive experience using Octave’s OnSite Completions for its operations, and they presented this option to joint venture partner, John Holland, for assessment. After careful consideration, the JHCPB team decided to implement this solution for the project.

Specifically, the team were impressed by OnSiteCompletions’ ability to work with third-party tools in order to customize a unique reporting structure, suitable to the complexity of the Rozelle Interchange project.

The solution

The project team used OnSite Completions as its live master asset register, which was systemized to enable its use throughout all levels of testing. All project subcontractors were provided with access to the system on both PC and mobile devices, and each company was allocated their own set of tasks.

Benefits

Importantly, OnSite Completions delivered significant time savings on the Rozelle Interchange project. The JHCPB team estimates around four hours were saved each week, simply by having the tasks linked to automated reports that could show the real-time status of the project.

This enhanced productivity and visibility at all levels of the company - including planners, commercial, construction, procurement and even the senior leadership team. Another significant benefit was sustainability: in total, OnSite Completions managed more than 140,000 tasks through the life of the project - all without the use of paper.

“We required a software solution for the Rozelle Interchange project that could streamline our completion and commissioning processes across all disciplines. OnSite Completions was instrumental in enabling us to deliver a quality product on time.”

“We’re looking forward to expanding on the benefits that OnSite Completions helped to deliver on the Rozelle Interchange project. We’ve had great success, although we have only scratched the surface in terms of the savings it can deliver.”
