Stadler Rail Group, headquartered in Bussnang, Thurgau, Switzerland, employs over 10,500 people at 12 production and component sites and various service locations.Sales amounted to more than 3.7 billion in 2025. The company focuses on the market segments of regional and suburban transport, metro transport and tramways, and is the global leader in the rack-and-pinion vehicle market.Stadler has also offered locomotives since acquiring Vossloh’s locomotive business in Valencia, Spain, in 2015. Stadler Rail is a systems provider of customized solutions in rail vehicle construction. In addition, Stadler has developed the SMILE, a new 11-piece, high-speed train that can reach speeds of up to 250 km/h.

The strategy

Until 2007, Stadler Rail Group had focused on the construction of rail vehicles. However, increasing privatization worldwide – particularly in the regional rail sector – offered the company the opportunity to enter a new field of business. Since then, Stadler has expanded its focus to the maintenance of rail vehicles, with its largest location in Hungary. This area of the business has become increasingly important.Given its background, the company was faced with new challenges in terms of planning and coordination of all maintenance activities, compliance with national regulations, documentation of activities and warranty processing. Stadler was looking for a software solution that would optimally support these activities and found it in Octave’s Enterprise Asset Management (Attune EAM).

The business solution

With the addition of Stadler’s maintenance division, the demand for planning, scheduling and other business processes increased. Attune EAM, with its business-specific functionalities, was the logical addition.“There was an extensive selection process but Octave’s solution was ultimately the one with the most potential,” said Jonas Gerspacher, project manager for Stadler Rail Maintenance Software SRMS.

“Decisive factors in favor of Octave included the system’s web capability, a high level of adaptability, flexibility and its ease of use,” added Gerspacher.The system was first implemented at Stadler’s site in Hungary. Since then, the system has been rolled out to approximately 30 other international locations.

The outcome

Today, all maintenance activities at Stadler Rail are recorded and tracked in Attune EAM. The process considers operational data as well as wheel measurement data.With the solution, it is now possible to map a new train fleet, including definition of maintenance activities, in a singlesystem in a very short time. Using Attune EAM, Stadler was able to tailor its maintenance processes to support Stadler-specific functions.Management is considering using Attune EAM as early as the production and warranty phase to process and document service activities. Thus, the entire lifecycle of new train fleets would be tracked by Attune EAM.
