Aktogay copper mine strengthens shift continuity and operational visibility

Globally, demand for copper has seen steady growth, driven by its role in electric mobility, renewable energy systems and digital infrastructure.

KAZ Minerals, which operates large-scale mining assets, including the Aktogay complex in eastern Kazakhstan, is one of the key players contributing to meeting this rising demand.

Aktogay combines open-pit mining with ore processing across two concentrators, Aktogay 1 and Aktogay 2, each designed for 30 million tonnes per annum.

Identifying goals

Aktogay operates as a large, multi-shift production environment where coordination between operators, supervisors and engineers is essential to maintain continuity and performance.

However, before adopting Tempo Operations Management, communication between day and night shifts relied on paper notes, verbal handovers or email exchanges.

Yerbol Abutaliyev, Concentrator Operations Manager at KAZ Minerals Aktogay, recalls some of the challenges the team experienced: “Paper notes were often lost or incomplete, which made them unreliable. Verbal handovers lacked consistency, with key details missed or interpreted differently. Communication was fragmented across emails, notebooks and informal messages. Reporting was not standardized, as operators used different formats, which reduced clarity and continuity. There was also limited traceability, with no audit trail, no reminders and no structured way to track outstanding tasks. For supervisors, visibility was constrained, with no single platform to review shift activities or historical trends.”

The site required a more structured approach to shift communication that would ensure consistency, traceability and accessibility of operational information across teams and timeframes. “The primary objective was to digitalize and standardize shift-to-shift communication by replacing paper-based logs, verbal briefings and scattered email exchanges with a unified, reliable and real-time digital platform,” Yerbol Abutaliyev explains.

This direction reflects the need for a unified operational record that can support both immediate decision-making and longer-term analysis, while remaining aligned with the realities of a continuous production environment.

Implementing the solution

To achieve this objective, the Aktogay team opted for Tempo Operations Management as a digital shift handover system across both Aktogay concentrators.

The system was deployed as a structured operational logbook used by operators, supervisors and engineers. It introduced consistent templates and workflows, which ensured that operational data is captured in a standardized and traceable format.

Implementation was carried out through close collaboration between operations, IT teams and the solution provider. The system was aligned with existing workflows, which allowed teams to adopt it without disruption to ongoing production

Realizing results

Since commissioning, the system has become a core operational tool at Aktogay, supporting consistent communication and coordination across shifts.

Yerbol Abutaliyev explains: “Since commissioning, Tempo Operations Management has been operating effectively and has proven to be a reliable digital logbook. It has strengthened operational continuity by removing the need for paper notes and reducing inconsistent verbal handovers. It provides a structured and traceable record of events, improves communication between day and night shift teams, and lowers the risk of missed information or miscommunication.”

Operational information is now consolidated into a single platform, which improves visibility for supervisors and engineers and enables more effective review of shift activities and trends.

Yerbol Abutaliyev highlights the broader impact: “The deployment has created a reliable operational intelligence system that enhances safety, efficiency and decision- making across operations assets.”

These improvements support stronger coordination between teams, clearer accountability and more consistent execution across a continuous production environment, turning shift handovers from a risk point into a source of control.
