The Flashforge Finder is an easy-to-use, compact and very affordable desktop 3D printer, suitable for beginners as well as experienced and professional users. MODERN AND WELL DESIGNED
The Flashforge Finder chassis is made of sturdy injection molded ABS composite and is designed for optimum stability and functionality. The built-in power supply, filament spool casing, and the LCD touchscreen make this a compact, easy-to-use and easy to transport 3D printer. There are no protruding components from the bounding volume of the 3D printer, making it safe, especially for children.
The 3D print head on the Flashforge Finder has a perfectly designed cooling fan, utilizing 360 degree airflow. This allows for warp-free, problem-free printing with PLA filament. Finally, the printer offers extremely silent operation at just 50dB or less during printing.
PRACTICAL BUILD PLATE
The detachable build plate easily slides in and out from the 3D printer’s build platform. When a 3D printed object is finished printing, the plate is pulled out and put on a table for easy removal of the printed object.
The build plate consists of a completely flat glass surface, covered with a thick, self-adhesive plastic coating on which the 3D print sticks to during printing. This replaceable coating is very durable and will last a long time, as long as it is kept clean. Alternatively, you can print directly onto the glass surface, after having spread the surface with a thin layer of glue with a glue stick. Covering the glass surface with blue masking tape for the print to stick to, also works well.
The Flashforge Finder build plate does not heat up, as the 3D printer is optimized for PLA filament which does not require a heated build plate. This reduces maintenance and results in faster 3D prints. Operating without a heated plate is also a safety benefit, perfect in a classroom environment.
The build volume is 140 x 140 x 140mm (5.5” x 5.5” x 5.5”), which is adequate for most prints. If larger objects are to be printed, they can easily be sliced up into several segments using the accompanying FlashPrint software. These parts can be printed separately and then glued together.
CALIBRATING THE BUILD PLATE
Reliable printing when using a fused filament fabrication 3D printer, largely depends on the build plate. It should be adjusted level in the X and Y planes, while maintaining the optimum distance from the print nozzle. The Flashforge Finder has a built-in distance sensor, which when combined with the easy to follow instructions on the touchscreen LCD, make for an effortless build plate calibration procedure.
Under normal use, you only need to calibrate the build plate the first time the 3D printer is used. After that, the build plate remains true and level. If needed however, the build plate can be re-calibrated for optimum results.
STANDARD 1.75 MM PLA FILAMENT
The Flashforge Finder uses standard 1.75mm PLA filament. The Flashforge brand spools contain 600g of PLA filament.
The Flashforge Finder has a special filament spool holder which neatly tucks into a dedicated space inside the 3D printer. This means the spool does not stick out from the machine, helping keep the filament dust free.
The spool holder has a built-in filament run-out detection capability. If you start a 3D print, it can calculate if there is sufficient filament available on the spool to complete the job. If a print job requires more filament than is available on the spool, the Flashforge Finder will pause printing when the spool runs out and allow you to replace the filament. Printing then resumes from where it was paused.
The filament run-out detection function can also be turned off, in the settings menu using the touchscreen. The Flashforge Finder can also accommodate a range of spool sizes and compatible PLA filaments from different manufacturers.
The Flashforge Finder has a distinctive, colour touchscreen, located on the top and center of the printer. Its positioning and angle to the user, make operating and checking the printer status very easy.
The interface with its large intuitive icons, makes the 3D printer easy to use and its settings easy to understand. From the screen, you can preheat the extruder, start prints from an internal file or file located on USB memory, and access all of the 3D printer’s settings.
3D PRINT SOFTWARE
3D prints on the Flashforge Finder are prepared with the FlashPrint software. Free to install on an unlimited number of computers, it is available for both the Mac OS X and Windows operating systems.
The FlashPrint software has a very simple and straightforward interface, where the build volume is represented in 3D and into which 3D model representations are imported. Objects can be scaled, rotated, and moved anywhere on the build plate using the software. If multiple objects are imported, the software can automatically place them in optimal alignment. With the ‘Supports’ function, you can automatically or manually create supports for prints that require support structures due to overhangs. The support structures are printed using the same material as the printed object, and easily discarded once printing has finished.
FlashPrint also comes with a set of preset profiles for printing at different resolutions: Low, Normal, High, and Super. You can experiment and fine-tune the settings to fit your needs. The ‘Cut’ function can split up 3D objects into two or more parts. This comes in handy when an object is too large for the printer’s build volume, and needs to be printed in several segments. In some cases, it may also be useful to split up a model into multiple parts, to make it simpler or achieve lower printing times, e.g. to avoid printing support structures. FlashPrint can also open regular 2D images in .jpg, .png, and .bmp formats. The software can then transform a 2D image into a 3D model. The pixel brightness (greyscale value) sets the thickness of the 3D model. The user can set the size and height of the model. This function makes it easy to make text signs or stamps from ordinary photos.
FlashPrint creates a 3D print file that can then be transferred to the Finder for printing. The transfer can be done via USB cable (included), Wi-Fi, or copied onto a USB memory stick (included) which is then inserted into the USB port on the side of the printer. Printing the file is executed with touchscreen commands.
The Flashforge Finder is based on open 3D print standards, which allows third party software like the function-filled Simplify3D to be used with the 3D printer.
