Correction "It can so be cracked"
In our May issue http://www.octave.com/cgi-bin/shop/shop.cgi/choice/html_nl2002may
we said that consumer DVD movies could not be copied. One of our readers challenged us on this point saying it can be done. The conclusion is yes it can be done. We could argue semantics, but we will leave it at yes it can so be cracked and enjoy a small piece of humble pie.
We were well aware that DVD movies can be cracked and have known this for several years. A teenage Norwegian hacker broke the code. His subsequent arrest made headlines all over the world. See: http://www.laweekly.com/ink/00/12/cyber-braunstein.php
If we were so inclined we could have any consumer software title or Hollywood movie title, even movies still in the theaters, cracked and burned to a CD or DVD. We have not yet heard of anything that is crack proof. But we are not in the business of piracy and we certainly do not promote it.
Our sales staff will still tell potential consumers that DVD movies cannot be copied should they ask. If we were to tell them yes that would oblige us to tell them how it can be done. To tell them how would lead us down a sticky road of potential legal pitfalls. We have a real office at a real physical address with a real incorporated company name with phones that are actually answered by real people. We cannot hide behind the anonymity the Internet appears to offer.

A Few Words from the President: "Launch of the 1-to-1 DVD Copy Master"
Last week Octave started to offer the 1-to-1 DVD Copy Master. This is an excellent unit for any organization looking for a low-cost entry into DVD Duplication.
In 1992 hard drives were topping out at 40 MBs! Today minimum hard drives on new PCs are 20GBs (500 times larger!) Needs are changing. Files are larger and continue to grow. CDs remain a viable storage medium and will continue to do so for the several years to come. Consumers that are looking to "future proof" should take a hard look at the newest member to our Copy Master line-up - the 1-to-1 DVD Copy Master.
Here is an example of how the unit is used. One of our customers works in the movie industry. From his company web site you can request a sample of their work on DVD. Once the request is received they use the DVD Copy Master to burn a copy of their portfolio on to DVD and then ship it. They say the customers are impressed and they believe the DVD Copy Master has helped them increase the number of contracts they land.

CD Copy Master Update: "Karaoke and non-Karaoke options"
In the 1 to 1 models we have a Karaoke ($595.00) version, a 24X non-karaoke ($395.00) and 40X non-karaoke ($495.00) available. CD+G makes Karaoke possible. The added format of CD+G is the reason for the increase in price. Karaoke CDs can only be burned at 4X - thus the speed is not selectable.

Question & Answer Forum:
| Q: |
Does the CD Copy Master connect to a PC or Mac? Would it use USB, scsi or firewire? |
| A: |
The CD Copy Master is a stand-alone CD duplicator. You put the master in the CDRom of the device and copy from there. There are no ports for connecting to a computer.

| Q: |
Can the CD Copy Master copy at multi-speed (because our intention is to duplicate around 30,000.00 CDs per month). What do we need? How often can we use the CD Copy Master during a day? |
| A: |
Your first question is can this copy multi-speed. Do you mean will it copy at other speeds than the maximum of either 24 or 40x? The 24x duplicator has a Selectable Record speed of 24X, 20X, 18X, 16X, 12X, 10X, 8X, 6X, 4X, 2X, & 1X. The 40x duplicator has a Selectable Record speed of 40X, 32X, 24X, 20X, 18X, 16X, 12X, 10X, 8X, 6X, 4X, 2X, & 1X.
The duplicators have drives with a Mean Time Between Failures of 50,000 Power On hours with a 25% duty cycle. This means that on average the unit can be used (recording) for 12,500 hours before you would normally expect a failure. Please remember this is the average and your experience might be higher or lower than this figure.
30,000 CDs per month does not mean anything unless you specify how long the CDs are or whether they are full or not. The average CDRom has only about 100 Mb of data on it (about 12 minutes of audio).
It takes up to three minutes to make seven copies of a full (650Mb or 74 minute CD). To burn 30,000 CDs a month you would need approximately 15 7 drive CD Copy Masters and one very dedicated employee!

| Q: |
Do you have any software available that can use a CD RW and a CD player to create DVD's?
|
| A: |
DVDs are very different from CDRWs and require a DVD recorder with a different laser head etc. So there is no way of using software to make a DVD from a CD recorder. You can make a Video CD however, which will play in most modern DVD players. A CD can hold about an hours worth of video (including audio) and the quality is about the same as a VHS VCR. Nero Burning ROM available on our website will achieve this for you.

| Q: |
I see that the EZCDPrint is the EPSON C-60. My question since I already have the Epson C-60 could I just purchase the parts to make it the EZCDPrint?
|
| A: |
The EZCD Printer is indeed BASED on the Epson C60 however there are parts inside that are re-machined as well as added parts for transporting CDs rather than paper. The manufacturer does not offer the parts separately as they require quite some skill to install.
